Friends of Uplands Park Bird Walk – October 31, 2015 – 9:00am- Cattle Point

David Newell sends the following announcement about the October Bird Walk in Uplands Park and at Cattle Point:

Hello Friends:
On Saturday, Oct.,31, Geoffrey will be leading his next Friends of
Uplands Park Bird Walk. Please meet at 9:00 a.m. in the large parking
lot out at the end of Cattle Point. Uplands Park is at the north end
of Willlows Beach in Oak Bay. After spending time observing sea birds
out at the point, we will head inland to observe wintering birds: Fox
Sparrows and Purple Finches may even be singing…

September 2015 Bird Walks with Geoffrey Newell – Uplands Park & CRD Hawk Watches

David Newell sends the following:

Join Geoffrey Newell on these three blrd walks with the CRD
and the Friends of Uplands Park

#1 On Saturday, September 19, Geoffrey will lead the Friends of Uplands Park bird Walk. Please meet at 8:00 a.m. in the large parking lot out at the end of Cattle Point. Uplands Park is at the north end of Willows Beach in Oak Bay. After observing sea and shore birds, we will head inland into the park to listen to and search for the many songbirds in this fabulous Garry Oak Meadow Community. On his August walk 65 species, including a Common Tern were observed!

#2 On Saturday, September 26 , Geoffrey will be attending the CRD Hawk Watch (Capital Regional District) in East Sooke Regional Park. This event is put on by the CRD in conjunction with the Victoria Natural History Sociey . The event is from 12 to 3 p.m. Typically, many types of raptors, Band-tailed Pigeons, Vaux’s Swifts and other migrants will be observed in large numbers. There will be a display tent regarding this mass migration at Aylard Farm. However, Geoffrey will be up at Beechey Head hoping to see you. You will be walking up and then down, a fairly steep and long path to Beechey Head from Aylard Farm. The hike takes about 30 minutes each way. The Aylard Farm entrance into East Sooke Regional Park is off Becher Bay Road.

#3 On Saturday, October 3 , from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Geoffrey will be continuing with a second Hawk Watch for the CRD, entitled The Birds of Beechey Head.Meet at the Aylard Farm Parking Lot at 10:00 a.m. for the hike up to Beechey Head.

Uplands Park Bird Walk – Sunday, August 30-2015

David Newell sends the following announcement:

On Sunday, August 30, Geoffrey will lead the Friends of Uplands Park bird Walk. Please meet at 8:00 a.m. in the large parking lot out at the end of Cattle Point. Uplands Park is at the north end of Willlows Beach in Oak Bay. After observing sea and shore birds, we will head inland into the park to listen to and search for the many song birds in this fabulous Garry Oak Meadow Community.

And another birding event of interest, also announced by David Newell:

On Saturday, August 29, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Geoffrey will be leading a bird walk for the CRD (Capital Regional District) out at Witty’s Lagoon, in Metchosin. On this walk, you will see and hear many woodland birds and several species of migrating shorebirds. Meet at the Nature House at 9:00 a,m. on Metchosin Road. Please note: we will be walking down, then up a fairly steep and long path to the beach. The path is, however, well-maintained.

Uplands Park Birding – Saturday, July 25,2015 @ 8:00AM

Hello Friends of Uplands Park:

Geoffrey’s next birding on Saturday July 25 will have an earlier start: please meet at 8:00 a.m. out at the end of Cattle Point
before going into Uplands Park. The fall migration has started and has been fantastic: Band-tailed Pigeons, Cedar Waxwings,
Orange-crowned Warblers, Pacific-slope Flycatchers. We also had four Black Swifts the other day, a first for the park!
The Mountain Sneezeweed and Ladies Tresses are in full bloom now as well, adding to the enjoyment of the walk!

Saturday Bird Walk in Uplands Park – June 27-2015

Join Geoffrey Newell Saturday, June 27, for an exciting first of the summer Friends of Uplands Park bird walk.  Please meet at 9:00 a.m. in the large parking lot out at the end of Cattle Point, where the boat launches are. Uplands Park is at the north end of Willlows Beach, along Beach Drive in Oak Bay. After observing sea and shore birds, we will head inland into the park to listen to and search for the many song birds in this fabulous Garry Oak Meadow Community.

Friends of Uplands Park Bird Walk – Saturday April 25, 2015 . 9:00AM

David Newell sends the following news about forthcoming “Bird Walks”:

#1    Join Geoffrey Newell next Saturday, April. 25, for an exciting spring migration Friends of Uplands Park Bird Walk.  Please meet at 9:00 a.m. in the large parking lot out at the end of Cattle Point.  Uplands Park is at the north end of Willlows Beach in Oak Bay.  After observing sea and shore birds, we will head inland into the park to listen to and search for the many song birds in this fabulous Garry Oak Meadow Community.  To top it off, several of the  22 species of endangered species of plants are now in full bloom.

Other Birding Events:

#2 On Saturday, May 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Geoffrey will be leading a bird walk for the CRD (Capital Regional District) out at
Witty’s Lagoon, in Metchosin.  On this walk, you will observe at least 60 species of birds, including several species of migrating shorebirds and songbirds,  Meet at the Nature House at 9:00 a,m. on Metchosin
Road.  Please note: we will be walking down, then up a fairly steep and long path to the beach.  The path is, however, well-maintained..

#3  On Saturday, May 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m., Geoffrey will be participating in International Migratory Bird Day at the south end of Beaver Lake Park.   If you would like to learn about the many
associations involved in the concern for birds in the Victoria area, there will be several tented displays sure to attract those who have a keen interest in birds.  The day is presented by the CRD Regional
Parks, the Victoria Natural History Society, and the Rocky Point Bird Observatory.  Join in the guided bird walks and the mist-netting, hummingbird and passerine bird banding demonstrations.   There will
also be crafts and games for younger children. This annual event is always very motivating and for which one will come to look forward to.

Geoffrey will be leading two hour-long bird walks in the morning, the first one being at 9:15  a.m. and a second one at 10:30 a.m. For the rest of the day, Geoffrey will be attendiing the CRD Regional Parks
booth.  Please drop by this booth.  There are some very interesting bird displays and games to test your knowledge of birds and bird
nests.

Birding in Uplands Park – Saturday March 28-2015

Did you know that 22 species of endangered species of plants are to be found in this park? Many thanks go to the numerous people who, over the years, have put in so many good efforts to remove the invasive species that compete with them.
