Blooming Fawn Lilies Nature Walk in Uplands Park – Such a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon (April 28, 2013)

What can be more wonderful than a walk in Uplands Park: a Bald Eagle, Common and Great Camas in bloom along with abundant Spring Gold and Western Buttercup, a rare Yellow Violet, White Fawn Lilies, Shooting Stars, new Garry Oak leaves, the rare Water Plantain Buttercup, and even a Chocolate Lily. A wonderful turnout for our first Friends of Uplands Park Nature Walk themed “Blooming Fawn Lilies”.

FOUP at Creatively United for the Planet April 2013

Friends of Uplands Park participated in Creatively United for the Planet on April 20-21, 2013. A windy day on Saturday posed a number of challenges, but sunshine welcomed lots of visitors to our tent. A rainy day for most of Sunday, so not so many visitors, but lots of chats with our wonderful volunteers. Thank you to all our volunteers who braved weather, carted exhibit materials, helped with the tent, painted faces, made owls and blue birds, made us laugh, and, created a lovely spirit of community.  Here are some photos:

Heritage of Uplands Park Panel Event – A Wonderful Evening (April 16-2013)

Excerpts of email from Margaret Lidkey to the Friends Of Uplands Park “Friends”.

April 17, 2013

Congratulations Kathleen on a wonderfully organized presentation last night on the Heritage of Uplands Park. Thank you to the Oak Bay Heritage Committee for partnering with us.

I enjoyed the diverse types of presentation of the 5 experts on the panel, from scientific research to spiritual and activity-based human connections to the “biotheatrical performances” of the ecology over the last 15,000 years. The evening projected Uplands Park as an extremely important part of the long-term heritage of Oak Bay.
This definitely supports the Friends of Uplands Park call to the OB Official Community Plan to include natural areas like Uplands Park in the visioning discussions of the Advisory Panel.

Thank you to the 5 panel presenters: Marion Cumming, Darcy Mathews, Ben Clinton-Baker, Dr. Larry McCann and Dr. Richard Hebda.
Thank you to the volunteers at the welcoming table, helping with food and to those who brought food.
Thank you to Mayor Nils Jensen for his opening comments….. Thank you to the 75 people who attended and for their kind donations ….. which will be split with the Heritage Committee.

I hope this presentation helped to foster the belief that people can learn to “live IN Uplands Park and not ON Uplands Park”… and to become part of that natural community. We all need to belong.

In appreciation and gratitude,
Margaret Lidkea, Co-Chair of the Friends of Uplands Park

Uplands Park Display at Oak Bay Public Library for month of April 2013

A beautiful display, featuring Uplands Park, is in the display cabinet at the entrance to the Oak Bay Public Library, for the month of April.

Oak Bay Heritage always does a display to feature each of their speaker events and because the upcoming April 16th Heritage of Uplands Park panel session is a joint Friends of Uplands Park and Oak Bay Heritage event, this month’s display features Uplands Park.

Margaret Lidkea (Friends of Uplands Park) and Marion Cumming (Oak Bay Heritage) have done a beautiful job setting up the display. Thanks to both of them for contributing books and artifacts and posters and their creative magic. Thanks also to Louise Goulet for providing live Garrow Oak Meadow plants that add so much to the enchantment of the display. Thanks also to Kathleen Matthews for her photos and maps.

Here is a photo of the display. Try and stop by, when the Oak Bay Public Library is open, and see the real thing. Attached is also the poster for the April 16th Heritage of Uplands Park event.
