The idea of a Friends of Uplands Park was realized by a chance meeting between Margaret Lidkea and Kathleen Matthews, in Uplands Park, on November 8, 2009, during Oak Bay’s Annual Tree Appreciation Day event. The Friends of Uplands Park announced itself officially on April 25, 2010 by hosting a first ever Celebration of Uplands Park. A Steering Committee was formed in January 2011 and the first order of business was to draft a Mission Statement and a Mandate. In collaboration with the Community Association of Oak Bay, the Friends of Uplands Park (FOUP) co-hosted the first ever Oak Bay Earth Day Celebration, on April 22, 2011. As provided for in the Friends of Oak Bay’s Mandate and Mission Statement, the Friends have been busy organizing Broom Bashes and have hosted two Community Talks, one in November 2010, featuring Dr. Brenda Beckwith, who spoke on the Garrry Oak Meadow Ecosystem, and a second talk, in February 2011, featuring doctoral candidate, Darcy Matthews, who spoke on the First Nations Cairns in Uplands Park. Steering Committee Members are also working with Oak Bay Parks to improve the signage, host a monthly Bird Walk on the 4th Sunday of every month, and, patrol for the invasive Burweed at Cattle Point. New Members are welcome.
